To the White House: “Do ACOE Lake O Discharges Comply with Environmental Laws?” SLR/IRL

Today I am writing to ask you please sign a petition that was put together by a young attorney I very much admire. He has been working hard  for the St Lucie River/Indian River Lagoon. Please read below and sign if you wish. If you have never signed an electronic petition before, you can check it out.

P.S. Thank you to the young people holding the torch and shining the light on water issues and bringing the new technologies and opportunities to the movement.

Information about this “We the People” petition:

“Explain how & confirm that Army Corps discharges into the St. Lucie & Caloosahatchee Rivers comply w/environmental laws.”

The discharges from Lake Okeechobee into the St. Lucie & Caloosahatchee Rivers by the US Army Corps of Engineers are a national environmental disaster; public safety hazard; threat to the health, livelihood, & well-being of many Floridians & Florida communities; deterrent to visitors from across the country; & are devastating to the complex ecosystems of the Indian River Lagoon, Jupiter Inlet, Pine Island, Sanibel Islands & others. Moreover, the discharges are appallingly indifferent towards stewardship of Florida’s most precious resource: its environment.

How are these discharges compliant w/environmental laws? What oversight actions have your Administration & EPA Administrator McCarthy taken to ensure that these waters are protected pursuant to law? What actions are presently underway?

“We the People” ( allows anyone to create and sign petitions asking the Obama Administration to take action on a range of issues. If a petition gets enough support, the administration will issue an official response.

  1. This petition looks an awfully lot like this one, except the one below is more legal and on target with concrete specifics. Who is the unnamed lawyer who wrote this?

Rick Scott and Associates should be indicted. The problem is corrupt racketeering in Florida from your greedy law breaking Republican associates.

Read this petition for facts, law, and reason to blame Florida state and local officials. The EPA and Justice are the best hope for remedy. It is surely not Murphy, Negron, or Scott.

Sign and share for a list of offenses by Rick Scott and Associates who must be indicted by Justice.

Many of you are reporting that you have signed up but your signature is not being published to the site. Don’t fret. There appears to be a delay on the White House side — which did not happen on our test run — but we expect it to be resolved soon. If you would also like to call the White House switchboard and ask to speak to the We The People petition folks, you can call 202-456-1414.

We apologize for this delay, but keep signing up! And keep sharing! We will get there.

    Thanks for your understanding.

  4. Good morning,

MESSAGE FROM ALEX: I wanted to give you an update on #OurRivers petition ( The good news:
We have 280 signatures, which makes us publicly searchable on the WH website. We currently are the 51st ranking petition out of 71.
Every young person I spoke with at the Stuart Beach Singlefin Showdown surf contest was very excited to engage and be apart of this fight. I got good questions and made it clear to them that if we are to win, they will have to lead us. They seemed excited for the responsibility. Because this petition is open to everyone 13 or older, it is an opportunity for many young people to have their first engagement in the political process. As Kelly can attest to as a young Martin County signature gather for Mr. Wickstrom’s successful gillnet constitutional amendment, there is long-term value to engaging in the political process at a young age.
We have good hashtags. We are calling it the #OurRivers petition. Our primary hashtag is #StopFlowFromLakeO (courtesy of Lauren Sweet, PhD doing marine research), which provides instant recognition of the issue. Our secondary hashtag is #WaterQualityMatters, which is designed to highlight that our problem has some of the same features of Flint, MI and the larger water issues our country is facing. Other hastags we’ve been using are: #StLucieRiver, #CaloosahatcheeRiver, and #IndianRiverLagoon.
We are getting great support from the City of Stuart. Even before the petition was mailed out, Mr. Nicoletti sent our advanced-notice email to the Commissioners and leadership departments, explaining we needed support, explaining it is not a partisan petition, and expressing his hope that they can help get it to the finish line. I am hoping
    Bad News:
Our roll-out happened at an unlucky time. The White House site basically crashed on the day we started the petition, and it appears to be still processing petitions very slowly. It hurt our roll-out, and we’ve waited to send most email blasts until this morning. The silver-lining is it forced me to reconnect with many former colleagues on the House Appropriations Committee, Administration, and WH explaining our issues. We also now have the contacts for the people running the We the People platform in the White House and they have been very responsive.
People are not clicking their confirmation emails after signing up. As of Friday afternoon, we had about 400 signups, only 194 of which had actually clicked the confirmation link in there email after signing up. Without confirming the email, the signature does not count.
Have not heard much from the local press. I’ve been keeping them informed, but they don’t respond. I’ve was hoping to get coverage by the Stuart News and Tampa Bay Times out of the gates (and they are whom I’ve been in contact with).
We need a Facebook page for this petition, and my twitter engagement with the federal piece is taking most of my time (and I do not presently use Facebook).
We need Seawall’s Point, St. Lucie, and Ft. Pierce support, and local governments from the Caloosahatchee side. I’ve only been in touch with CoS, ToJI, and MC.
So, that is where we are. I will be sending some emails this morning, but I wanted to give you the in-depth update. Thank you for all your support!
