Recently my husband Ed and I received a postcard in the mail advertising Langford Landings’ Grand Opening on March 10th, 2018.
It made me so sad to see this card. It looked like an ad from Rooms to Go.
I just don’t see how we as a county allowed such a tropical, historical piece of property to go to the “cookie cutter mill.”
Albeit the homes are expensive, pretty, and modern, they have no character of the original famed, Frances Langford Estate. None. Scraping all the trees off the land was the greatest sin, as these modern homes could look more tropical, more Frances Langfordish, if they had left some of the stately trees that she planted.
Yes, the developer “did not break any rules,” but we did, the Martin County Commission did. The rule broken? To show respect and honor to those who have walked before us. Especially, Mrs Langford.

Oh dear. The worst thing is that the new homeowners might not consider any native plants, and could be clueless as to appropriate plant material. Hope the developer has a sensitive landscape architect on board and strict landscape guidelines for new property owners.

Love that peacock picture. This ugly mess was done within the current development codes of Martin County.Someone needs to drag this place into the era of good growth with resposible environmental codes and enforcement. Thanks for being a broken record.
As I said after the defeat of sewer lines for Sewall’s Point. There are no longer any people with history to the area. There is no longer the need for a clean lagoon. Children can no longer wade and know the wonders it once held. Blame the iphone and the almighty dollar.

The love of money is the root of evil…follow the money.
It is so sad that people don’t treasure history, or the environment. The developers could have built a lesser number of homes there that would be sited in an environmentally sensitive way. That approach would have resulted in less profit for them.
I ask myself every day – why are we in an era when it seems like the people in power only care about themselves and profit – What happened to Francis Langford’s estate, after her generosity to the community – is criminal, but it is symptomatic of what is currently happening in our country as a whole.
We have to remedy this before there is nothing left for our children’s’ generation!
So sad, so true. We should never forget. Never stop, Jacqui.
The new homes are clones of everything else out there in the “new home” world. No character, nothing unique about them, nothing that says “Florida”.

Jackie, Your statement is simply flat out wrong. The developer actually did not follow his own plans or the county’s development rules laws. You must have been busy when the public voiced their opposition to this project by citing violations of the county’s Comp Plan, LDR’s, the developer’s drawings at the BOCC meeting. I don’t know how you developed your opinion, but sadly, I feel your sources are flawed. With respect, Paul

I put that saying in quotations as it came from the Martin County Commission’s Growth Management Dept at some point. That was what was reported and said reading the huge outcry and public anger over the project. That is why I wrote it as such. I do believe the only thing they got in trouble for or fined for was trucking away and selling the beautiful ridge sands to someone in St Lucie County. Sorry if this was confusing. Basically, there were NO repercussions for the total scraping of every blade of grass etc on that property. This determination came straight from Growth Management. The quote was meant to highlight that nothing was done. If you have a list of what they were actually charged for–please send it to me as I am unaware. Thanks so much.

The thing that gives me peace of mind, albeit very little, is that mother nature is unstoppable. No matter how hard and plentiful the concrete blocks that will cover this earth, (and they won’t stop until they-shamefully- develop and collect every profitable penny they can) it will only be temporary. And their money won’t save them. These lands will undoubtedly become what they once were again. Of course this will take lifetimes, but it will happen. And perhaps next time we will know and be better as a human race. Until then, I’m glad you speak out. Shed the light. Lots of love. 🙏💫💛
Back in the 90’s I ordered a new15 horse evenrude. When it arrived the box it was in said made in mexico. With all the talk about how much money Mrs. Lancaster “donated” it has now made me wonder if they plowed over this property to destroy the history they don’t want told. Maby Mrs Lancaster and Mr. Evenrude were being blackmailed or exstortion to force American jobs out of this country. I am sure blackmail and exstortion are just tools of the trade in Florida politics.
In Sebastion Wal Mart wanted to move right next to K mart. It made more sense for the 2 stores to be separated so people would have a store close to them. The state wanted to BUY pelican island and when Walmart payed the BRIBE money Wal Mart moved right next to K-Mart and K-mart shut its store down.(no one can compete with forign slave labor) You can not sue the government and the only way in the constitution to correct bad behavior is the right to assemble and bear arms. All our teachers are on the states payrole and have been useing our kids like a tool to acheve their goals for a long time. Never supplying schools with kevlar vest and leading kids to take all the guns is just one example. DON’T BE FOOLED.
There are no pelicans on pelican island any more and it is one of the least visited parks in Florida

My family and I moved to Martin County in 1974; pro-growth commissioners are ruining this wonderful area; Langford Landing is an example of destruction of nature and Frances Langford would be as horrified as we are! Whatever happened to our erstwhile county slogan, “Enjoy Our Good Nature”……??
Paul Shidel is correct in his comments…..there were many non compliances that were only discovered when the public began to complain about the obvious rape of that land. ….and when we complained, the BOCC members implied that we were wrong or lying..of, course UNTRUE. We even submitted photographs of the trucks illegally removing loads of sand etc. and trucking it to PT ST Lucie.. the sad part is I don’t think anyone really learned any lessons from that whole debacle….and now plans are in the works for many more communities. I hope that the rules are obeyed…although recently this Commission has changed many rules in our Comp Plan so that some of our rules and regulations of old are no longer in place. And by the way I DO know how much you love the river
but the Comp Plan changes that have recently been allowed are a disaster for our river issues. I never quite understood why the “river” people never saw the very important connection between over development and our unhealthy, dangerous river conditions.
