Yesterday, I referred to our plight of trying to influence our state legislature and governor to purchase option lands in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA)– in order to save the St Lucie River/Indian River Lagoon, as “breaking down a wall…”
To quote:

This got me thinking about another wall I have seen come down in my lifetime, and why I remain optimistic in about our journey. If you were alive 1989, you “saw” the Berlin Wall come down in Germany. Many believed this wall of communism would “never come down,” but it did. I was in Germany just months after the wall actually broke open on November 10, 1989 and lived there teaching for two years. I think this is one reason I believe we can achieve our goals. Stranger things have happened…
I think President Reagan’s said it best in his speech. His words remain an inspiration to us today.

The EAA is a wall of sorts. A symbolic wall. It is time to break down this wall. I have faith we will do just that…..and really, we already are!

Wall. I had the chance to see both sides of the wall and Berlin as a 6th grader in 1960. It left a lasting impression on me to this day. I can remember before leaving East Berlin, the east German solders using mirrors mounted on a dolly checked under our bus searching for anyone trying to escape.
That is quite a memory Billy. Thanks. Yes such an impression. I taught in both old EAST and WEST Germany and it was totally weird that walking basically across the block was so different. Lasting impression is the way to describe the place….Appreciate your comment. Good to see u 2.

About 10 years ago I went to a town called Lugansk in Ukraine. My friends were(and are) Soviate officers who had to step down after the fall of the USSR. They told me how everyone there had their summer houses that they would go to to grow their vegitables. For me it was like going back in time here in America. Knowing how selective breeding is how our vegitables we know today came to our dinner tables gave me the idea of sending them non -hybred seeds form the Baker Creek seed company in Missouri so people could do like we did here many years ago.

The one thing I do dislike about big ag. is the fact that they crushed the small American farmer. If you have searched the information on the Baker Creek seed company you have found that they have visited food markets from all over the world and have a one of a kind collection of editable foods.Many of these plants have not been through the intense selective breeding that corn—strawberrys—tomatoes and many others have. For hundreds of years farmers had state fares where they could show off their blue ribbon vegitables and animals. This was not only a friendly gathering but this is how the foods we know today came to be. What better place than Ukraine to create new and better foods through this age old process. I sent money last year so my friends could get out. I do not understand this civil war

I have wondered many times how this project went. It was actually about 13 years ago. People there all know how to grow prize winning gardens much like America used to be.Sometimes I feel greed and love for money has made us loose our brains.
I have a couple of friends who have a garden. My grandparents on my mom’s side always had a huge garden….I am a wimp. Thanks Brent.
If you get a chance ,show your friends who have a garden the Baker Creek seed company web site. In Ukraine people are much more involved in their gardens which made it the perfect spot to carry on one of the things that I believe made America great. It is all about money here and I can’t see things changeing. People don’t care if aluminium sulfate causes alshimers or Geneticly Modified Organisms(GMOs) have negative health issues as long as they can make a buck.

When I was in Ukraine I was eating a fish and they told me that they had one main fish there called ‘pintoshea’. This fish has very fine hair like bones and I could tell a person had to be VERY carefull when they ate it.I worked with a guy who had found an abundance of a similar fish in mountain streams in the Ozarks. He had found a way to cook this fish that everyone else had rejected because of the needle bones. He sliced up and down the sides so the hot cooking oil could penetrate and make the bones crispy.Then a person could eat away without any concerns. Do you think I might have made an impression in Ukraine?
